Present position: Professor, President of the Faculty of Geography of Moscow State University, Head of Department of Landscape Geochemistry and Soil Geography.
Academician Professor Nikolay Kasimov (b. 1946) is the world’s leading expert in the landscape geochemistry. He has an MSc, PhD and doctoral degrees from the Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU ), and was appointed full Professor there in 1984. He has published so far more than 300 research papers that have been cited worldwide (over 1000 citations), co-authored more than 20 books and atlases. At Moscow State University he teaches "Geochemistry of the landscapes", "Geochemistry of natural and anthropogenic landscapes” courses. He also gave lectures in Sofia, Havana, Barcelona and Cambridge Universities. He supervised over 20 Ph.D. students and has over one hundred academic descendants.
NIkolay Kasimov in 2000 has been elected as a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Section of Earth Sciences), and in 2008 - as full member (academician) of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Section of Earth Sciences.
Since 2000 he is a vice-president and since 2008 - first vice-president of Russian Geographical Society which is one of the oldest and significant geographical organizations of the World with over 13 000 members in Russia and abroad. Through various collaborative programs he is serve to increase the visibility and international impact of Russian research.
The range of his scientific interests and conducted studies is larger-then-life deep and wide. He developed the widely accepted theory of geochemical barriers and gave detailed description of acidic, alkaline and evaporative barriers. His scientific studies have established basic laws of modern geochemical structure of the steppe and desert landscapes of Eurasia as well as their paleogeochemistry in the Cainozoic era. Prof. Nikolay Kasimov has also conducted pioneer studies in a few scientific fields. His series of cornerstone paper has made a major contribution to crystallizing the modern concept and the strategy of the higher environmental education for sustainable development.
